Recycled Solvents: To use or not to use?
Recommendation

29 June - 1 July 2026
Berlin, Germany
Part of the ICH Q7 Training Courses 2026
On APIC's website in the folder "publications" the position paper named "APICs position on the use of recycled solvents in production of APIs: a risk-based practice to foster" is published. This paper mentions the regulatory framework regarding recovered solvents and also lists the opportunities resulting from these rules and guidelines.
After a short introduction in which it is mentioned that "The use of recycled solvents in API production is one of the most important opportunities to lower the environmental footprint of APIs without negatively impacting product quality.", APIC underlines in seven sections this thesis and proposes the broader use of the risk-based approach. As APIC and its members are aware of the hick-ups and challenges which could occur while using recycled materials, it is stated that APIC will make available a "How-to-document with definitions of recycled solvents, best practices in industry, pre-requisites for the use of recycled solvents and guidance for a justification or risk-assessment, suggesting regulatory flexibility where scientific justification is in place." As there is a new Working Group called "Joint Sustainability WG (Reusable/ Sustainable solvents)" founded, the "How-to-document" could be most likely prepared and published by this group.
The complete content of the position paper "APICs position on the use of recycled solvents in production of APIs: a risk-based practice to foster" can be checked with several further position papers and publications on APIC's website.
