New VDI Guideline 2083 Sheet 22 published: Measurement of Condensable Airborne Substances

Good Engineering Practice for Pharmaceutical Companies and Suppliers
The Association of German Engineers (VDI) has presented a new draft document on cleanroom technology in Sheet 22 of its 2083 series of guidelines. The guideline "Measurement of condensable airborne substances" describes a method for sampling and analyzing condensed chemical contamination on surfaces.
The results of these measurements provide important information for the protection of processes and products. Chemical surface contamination can significantly impair quality and safety in many manufacturing industries. However, contamination in liquid process media is not covered by the directive.
The scope of application covers all production and warehouse areas in which products and processes can be affected by chemical surface cleanliness. Organic contaminants, including silanes and siloxanes, are addressed.
The new guideline is intended to provide users with a tool to better assess surface cleanliness and thus increase product safety.
In addition to definitions of terms and abbreviations, the document contains a brief description of sampling and analysis as well as information on materials and equipment (such as collection media, transport and analysis tubes, holders, and thermal desorption systems). Further chapters deal with the practical implementation of the measurement, the calculation of the results, and requirements for the test report.
Appendices provide information on measurement uncertainty and the level of safety in limit value testing.
The new 20-page draft is available from Dinmedia.
