Track & Trace: SecurPharm Pilot Project now also considers the GS1 Standard

SecurPharm is the common initiative of the associations of drug manufacturers, wholesalers, and pharmacists designed to develop technical solutions to comply with the requirements of the EU Directive on combating counterfeiting.

At the meeting on 30 March 2012, the participants involved in the project agreed on essential technical and organisational details to be implemented in the pilot project. This project will start in the beginning of 2013 in Germany.

Among the decisions taken, it has been agreed that

  • The pilot project shall include - besides the IFA Code - an additional GS1 standard.
  • The NTIN solution from GS1 is accepted as a technical alternative in the pilot project. For this, the German Pharma Central Number (Pharmazentralnummer / PZN) will be embedded in a GTIN. However, this requires the consent of the organisation.
  • The IFA Code should remain applicable even in the extensive roll out following the pilot project.
  • The use of further encoding standards will be possible in the future as long as they comply with the technical and legal requirements.

Dr Stephan Schwarze, Bayer Pharma AG, will present the newest developments of SecurPharm at the Conference "Strategies against Counterfeit / Falsified Medicines" taking place from 7 - 8 May 2012 in Würzburg, Germany.
