Dear Dr. Sukul,

The current microbiological specification for herbal medicinal products (Ph.Eur 5.1.4) is as follows:
Catagory 4 A products to which boiling water is added before use: Total Aerobic count not more that 10E7 bacteria and 10E5 fungi pre gram and not more than 10E2 E coli per gram.
Catagory 4B products to which boiling water is not added before use:
Total viable aerobic count not more than 10E5 bacteria and 10E4 fungi per gram. Not more than 10E3 enterobacteria per gram.
Absence of E.coli 1 gram
Absence of Salmonella 10 grams
Please note that these values may well be revised when the 5th edition of the Ph.Eur comes into force in 2005.
